books
Everything I Want to Do Is Illegal by Joel Salatin - written by the proprietor of Polyface Farms in the Shenandoah Valley, this deals with the struggle between the small, local, artisanal farmer and the corporate industrial farming norm in the U.S.
Out of the Flames by Lawrence & Nancy Goldstone - This book begins in the Middle Ages and examines the theology, science and politics of the times. A friend loaned it a while back and I need to read it while in Seattle and return it!
Breaking the Vicious Cycle; Intestinal Health Through Diet by Elaine Gottschall - Much more riveting than it sounds
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald - for a book club I might join
A Pirate Looks at Fifty by Jimmy Buffet - Juvenile, self-indulgent & out of touch Why??? Someone gave it to B. and it's was within arm's reach while I was bedridden.
Creations of Fire: Chemistry's Lively History from Alchemy to the Atomic Age by Cathy Cobb & Harold Goldwhite
Chemistry Demystified - I know, I know, you wonder how I can live with so much excitement
A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain (loaned to me by A for some light reading before I delve into books on chemistry)
Fatal Flowers by Rosemary Daniell (surprised by some similarities to some writing I'm working on)
Little Birds by Anais Nin
Harry Potter 7
movies
My Brilliant Career
March of the Penguins - I had worried that it would be too intense/desperate for J. It was fine.
The Magdalene Sisters - powerful
Fellini's La Strada
The Motorcycle Diaries - Loved this!
Julien Donkey Boy
The Laramie Project
A Streetcar Named Desire - Neither B. or I had watched this before. I think Blanche DuBois could be in my family, in fact several characters could.
The Killing Fields - more and more I have a hard time understanding how in countries get caught up in this ridiculous practice - still in this day and age. My hope is that in fifty years people will look back and consider us a bunch of numbskulls, my fear is that we'll still be engaging in war.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - B. and I went to the movie's together ALONE for maybe the 2nd time since we've been together. Great casting. B. only rated it a 2 on a scale of 1-5.
Little House on the Prairie Seasons 1 & 2 watch w/J. (We watch and watch and rewatch these. Season 1 really is better.)
music
Ani DiFranco - Canon
Closing Time by Tom Waits - I'm revisiting an old favorite here
Wolf Ways by Michael Hurley - I think he's out in Oregon these days for anyone living out that way
the Brightness by Anais Mitchell wish it included the Wall from Hadestown that song just floors me
"Love" the Beatles (remixes - J got this for her bday and I'm really enjoying it - for the first time ever, makes me want to see a Vegas show)
Back to Black by Amy Winehouse
